Mysterious Black Holes

Sometimes, when playing, I notice black holes in areas of the levels I haven't been to before. Are those from misfired gravitational anomaly missiles, or is it a bug?

Yeah, this is from an misfired homing force missile.
The missile will explode after 3 seconds and create an black hole.
